Composting is an aerobic process (with oxygen). Therefore, a well-aerated compost windrow is a requirement for a proper decomposition. Valuable information about the aerobic decomposition process can be obtained by measuring the carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen (O2 ) content of the compost windrow, as microorganisms consume oxygen in the course of the decomposition process, converting it into carbon dioxide.
