As an alternative to the compost protection fleece, it is possible to cover the row with a semi-permeable membrane. The most important property of a membrane is its odour-filtering effect. Due to its physical properties, compost protection fleece only has this effect when wet. But in actuality, a suitable membrane, when used properly, can reduce odours but up to 95%. To achieve this, active aeration must always be employed. Membrane composting without aeration is technically impossible, as this would cause the oxygen in the windrow to be consumed very rapidly, with the process becoming anaerobic. This would further accelerate the formation of odorous substances.
